Sony Ericsson Idou

The new Sony Ericsson Idou will probably create as much hype as the original XPERIA. Not only it is the first 12 megapixel GSM cameraphone, but it's also the first device presented to ever run on the brand new open source Symbian user interface that's still being developed by the Symbian Foundation. The 3.5-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels, GPS and Wi-Fi and the relatively compact size are just an added bonus to that already impressive novel package.

Olympus E-520

The Olympus E-520's all-black, compact body measures 5.4 x 3.6 x 2.7 inches (136 x 91.5 x 68 millimeters) without a lens attached, and weighs 1.0 pound (475 grams) without the lens, battery, or memory card. While the E-520 isn't super-compact, it is light enough to carry on vacation or around town thanks to its plastic body panels.

Nikon Coolpix P80

The most notable feature on the Nikon Coolpix P80 is its impressive 18x optical zoom lens, which covers a 35mm equivalent range of 27-486mm. That's a lot of zoom for an MSRP of about $399. Billed by Nikon as the "world's most compact super telephoto camera," the Coolpix P80 is indeed fairly small considering its very large lens. It won't fit into a jeans pocket, but should still fit into larger coat pockets and purses pretty well.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230

The latest entry-level model in the company's W-series, the Sony W230 is closely related to the W220 model which was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show a few weeks ago. The Sony W230 looks to be a fairly straightforward LCD upgrade of the previous camera. Based around a 1/2.3" SuperHAD CCD image sensor with 12.1 megapixel resolution coupled to a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar branded 4x optical zoom lens, the Sony W230 offers equivalent focal lengths will range from 30 to 120mm, while the maximum aperture varies from f/2.8 to f/5.8 across the zoom range. Macro focusing will be possible down to a minimum of four centimeters. The W230 will forgo any optical viewfinder in favor of a 3.0" LCD display with 230,000 dot resolution - just a little bigger than the 2.7" LCD of the W220, although the dot count is identical.
